Transparency

Listening to Barack Obama talk about transparency in this mornings news conference rang true with my own personal efforts at reinventing the Gen Plus website. Over the past few years I received so many questions about setting up a blog or a website and so I'm doing something a bit bizarre. I'm going to be transparent about how I build my new site. Rather than unveil the "finished" product with a grand launch, I'll invite you to watch the evolution of the site!

Although I blog on Blogger, I'll be setting up the website using WordPress and if you head over to www.genplususa.com, in fact, you'll see a blank WordPress template replacing the old site. Over the next few weeks and months, you'll hopefully learn as I build it. When I first started with my first website, the process was painful! There were no pre-built databases or shopping carts and my programmer, designer and I spent months on refining and building every aspect of the site. Now, of course, you can find most anything, so the learning curve is a lot less. If you have questions along the way, I'll answer them. If you want to try to build your own site, go for it!

But as a self-taught Boomer Blogger, if I can help you learn a thing or two along the way...why not? So, here is to transparency -- even if you don't understand what I'm doing right at this point.

Congrats on your move to Wordpress and to your own domain. I think you will enjoy it. As a fellow baby boomer/blogger I look forward to following you over there.

Thanks! I've run www.genplususa.com as a Boomer/50 plus job site for 4 years, but kept my blog separate. I'm so impressed by Wordpress that I've been inspired to change it ALL up! Your blog looks interesting. I'll be sure to check it out more.

I thinking about moving to Wordpress, as Blogspot seems to have a lot of issues.

It was recommended I start with wordpress, but it was too technologically advanced for me, so I started with Blogger. I still have issues with it, but at least I feel I can focus on the writing more than the technical aspects.

Cathy S: There is a LOT to learn...even on Blogger! And I've been on Blogger for 4 years for a really good reason...I didn't require a "hosted" site; i.e. a site that also needed database capabilities. If I were staying with a daily diary format and not adding anything else, I'd stick with Blogger. Once you learn all those bells and whistles, it is really fun AND easy to move things around on your site. Wordpress.com is equivalent to Blogger, but has a few different features. For a daily blog, I'd probably stick with Blogger. Wordpress.ORG (Also known as Hello World) is MUCH more challenging as it forces you to learn more of the back end dynamic. I would NOT recommend .ORG for a novice! It's taking me HOURS to figure out certain things, but once I do, I'm very satisfied.
